Uva Ursi
Latin Name: Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi
Other Name: Bearberry, Beargrape, Kinnikkinnik
Uva ursi is a low-growing shrub and its leaves have been traditionally used to treat urinary tract infections (UTI) due to its active ingredient arbutin that has antiseptic and diuretic effects.
Uva ursi has small, dark fleshy leaves and clusters of small, white or pink flowers that eventually grow into red berry fruits. It is also known as 'bear's grape' because bears are fond of the fruit.
It is proposed that its active ingredient, arbutin, helps kill UTI-causing bacteria in the urine and reduce inflammation of the urinary tract. However, it is recommended to avoid use of high dose uva ursi not more than a week, as long-term use could irritate liver.
